I’ve been thinking about a cheap third vehicle for a while. See, my wife and I both have vehicles that are about 12-15 years old with 160k on them, and if you’re going to have those sort of vehicles you need to have a bunch of them.
Now, the two vehicles are a Powerstroke F250 and a Mercedes ML350, so they’re not junk by any means. But having one new car isn’t an option (we work different schedules and have a baby), so instead I’ll add ANOTHER older car.
Of course we’re on Oppo, so there’s no reason that can’t be a fun thing. I’ve been watching a lot of The Walking Dead lately, and have often thought about what would be my ideal apocalypse car. Cheap, rugged, parts need to be available...and unlike on TWD, it should probably be a diesel because diesel keeps longer than gas does.
A 1981 240d available locally with a stick.
This, along with my prior searches, has brought me to old Mercedes cars. Ideally I’d like an early 90s E class diesel wagon with 4-matic, but I’m not sure that exists. Second choice is maybe a diesel S class, but I’d really like a wagon.
It seems like I have to choose two of the three. I can have a diesel wagon, I can have an AWD wagon, or I can have an AWD diesel...but I don’t think I can find all three.
How would you guys choose?

Just don’t get an older (70's era) non-turbo diesel benz. They are brutally slow. In fact, if there was a zombie apocalypse, the zombies slow rambling walk would be faster than a diesel MB. And parts are getting harder to find, and more expensive.

I considered that. An E420 wagon would be ideal as far as gassers...lots of space, plenty of punch to escape zombies or non-zombie jerks.

There really is only one option for a diesel S-Class, a W126 with an OM603, which I believe is the 1986-87 300SD/SDL.
The older models are OM617 powered, which are turbo diesel 5's, and trust me you’ll want that extra cylinder in the 603. And the newer 3.5 Turbo diesels in the 350SD/SDL W126 and W140s are referred to colloquially as “the rod bender”

I believe the W124 was offered with a diesel and AWD; however, good luck finding one, I don’t think they sold in huge numbers.

The R-class is a wagon that came in diesel and AWD... But I’m guessing that’s not exactly what you mean by old. They are all also still $20k-ish.

Diesel wagon. You really don’t need AWD.

Asked AutoTrader for a nationwide search of 4WD/AWD+Diesel+Wagons... got a whole bunch of F30 335d xDrives, a whole mess of R320 CDI 4Matics (including a 2007 for $11,000 which is suddenly temping me... 130,000 miles I think), and this. I don’t think this is what you are looking for, but it looks like a pretty good zombie apocolypse vehicle to me! What about an AWD Dodge Magnum. Gets you the AWD and wagon part of things, and the Hemi is so common parts should be readily available. The RT+AWD combo was somewhat limited production, but it looks like they can be had in the $6-7k range these days.

Closest thing to an old diesel AWD wagon that you’ll find is either a Suburban 6.2 or 6.5, or maybe (they’re unicorns) a Cherokee 2.1 turbodiesel.
Otherwise, you’ll have to give up AWD, or give up old (to get an R-class or a 328d xDrive wagon).
